Can I use an HDTV antenna with my regular TV?
-
I don't even know whether my TV is a digital or analog. All I know is it was a 10-year-old TV. I give up the cable/sattlelite monopoly service and want to try an indoor TV antenna but I got confused when most of them say HDTV on the box. By the way, I live in suburban area 30 miles east of Atlanta, GA.

Answer:
most certainly, it could also work vice-versa. 30 miles isn't much but if you decide indoor I think you should get a roof antena. .....link might help

10 yr old TV? Very likely a TV w/ an analog tuner. You're a candidate either for an upgrade to a digital TV (HDTV, very likely) or a DTV converter box, for which you can get a $40 coupon from the US Government to defray the cost of a box. Don't worry that the antenna box says HDTV on it. It will work on your analog tuner. The question is whether that indoor antenna will get you a signal 30 miles out of Atlanta. I'm a believer that a big outdoor antenna is the best answer for long distances (anything outside 15 miles). You might get something at 30 miles, but in-building attenuation will affect your poor indoor antenna's ability to get what will probably be a weakened digital signal for the future. And that future is coming in Feb 2009.

Sorry to rain on everybody's parade, but some antennas labeled HD ONLY receive UHF bands and can not receive the digital channels still in the VHF bands (this does happen in certain areas of the country). This means that your (10 year old) analog only TV will need a converter box. Your indoor HDTV antenna may not receive the digital channels still in the VHF bands & it may not receive all of the digital channels in the UHF bands if you are further than 20-25 miles from your TV station's transmission point. It's best for you to input your location & home style into the web site: http://www.antennaweb.org to determine the type of antenna best suited for your location, whether it needs amplification and the best direction to point your antenna. This site will also tell you exactly which stations you can expect to receive in your area.

Yes, in the US there is no difference in the antennas for old fashioned and HDTV. They still pick up the same channels. To know where all the stations are with respect to your home and to help you choose an antenna you can visit this web site sponsored by the Consumer Electronics Association and the National Association of Broadcasters. http://www.antennaweb.org
