Can I watch local channels on my HDTV?

What are "HDTV Antenna Channels" and can I watch major networks on them?

  • My mom says that she doesn't watch TV too much and she doesn't want to pay for cable, so we are getting what she says is "HDTV Antenna Channels" which I have never heard of. I read up on it and the only thing I could find is the antennas themselves and something that said the channels differ depending on your location. I live in northern VA. Will I get to watch networks like Comedy Central and History Channel? What shows CAN I watch? The antenna is called "Geo

    It all depends on what area you live in. As a rule of thumb you'll get NBC, PBS, ABC, CBS, FOX and a half dozen other local channels.These air most of your favorite shows (the super bowl, how i met your mother, the office, parks and rec, dancing w/ the stars, the voice, news, news, and more news). On a side note, as a person who grew up in the country (where there was no cable) I find it baffling that people have never heard of watching TV over the air. Have you never seen a roof top antenna, or rabbit ears? Did you not see the commercials that aired for months on TV about the digital switch over. Go to antennaweb.org and put in your zipcode. The site will tell you what stations/networks are available in your area and what type of antenna you need to receive them. Most likely it will just be your regular networks stations like PBS,CBS, ABC,FOX, and NBC. Comedy Central and the History Channel are just available for paid cable stations.

You will get local broadcast channels ABC, NBC, Fox, CBS and PBS. There may be some independent channels as well. You will not get any pay channels like CC or History Channel. You will get the same channels you could get 30 years ago without cable.
