Is there any type of tv cable splitter?

Questions about cable TV splitter?

  • I currently have a digital cable box hooked up to my Tivo, but I would like to split the signal from the wall so that it goes both to the cable box AND to a DVD recorder (allowing me to record two different shows at the same time). My questions are: 1) The DVD recorder would be receiving the signal without a cable box. Will I be able to record basic cable and local channels using the tuner on the DVD recorder? 2) If the answer to the first question is yes, will this arrangement still work after the conversion to digital in February 2009? In other words, is the signal from the cable company digital without the box? 3) Is there a coupler I could use to connect the splitter to the cable outlet or do I need to use coaxial cable? Thanks!!

  • Answer:

    1. If your DVD recorder has the proper tuner (NTSC for analog cable, QAM for digital cable), it should be able to record the non premium channels. To test this, connect the cable directly from the wall to the DVD recorder and see if you can get video and audio. 2. The change in February 2009 only affects free Over The Air signals one would get with an antenna. Cable is not affected by that change. That does not mean Comcast won't make changes, but any changes would be independent of the February deadline. 3. Just use a short piece of coax for all the connections. Make sure you get a good quality splitter with a frequency range good to at least 1GHz. The frequency range will be written on the front of the splitter. I hope this helps. With the DVD recorder not connected to the digital box, you will still be able to record basic cable. The tuner will be able to do that. The conversion in 2009 will only affect TV's with the rabbit ear antenna, so the conversion will not affect your recordings at all. With the cable splitter, just use a coaxial cable. A coupler is used to extend a coaxial cable. Have the wall connection going into the Input in the splitter, then have the outputs going to the DVD recorder, and the digital box.
