How can I hook up my sound bar to my new tv?
-
I just bought a new TV and it only has Component In, Coaxial, Y/Video, and HDMI (which are both being used). I have a sound bar that I would like to use from my old TV. It has a the ability to hook up though RCA cables, or a Line In audio cable. I can't figure out a way to hook it up since the tv only has component in and no out. Please help with any suggestions!

Answer:
The only sound output that HD tvs have is an optical audio output. On your sound bar, is the Line In audio cable input an optical input? If so, just run the optical out of the tv into the sound bar. If your sound bar doesn't have the optical in you can use the rca red/white inputs if you have a cable or sat. box. Just use the rca sound outputs directly from the cable box straight into your sound bar bypassing the tv. Be sure to turn off the tv sound if you use this method.

In my opinion, ditch the sound bar and get a real surround sound system, they aren't that expensive anymore. I myself have had true surround sound from DVD for almost 10 years, I first got a mid-range DVD 5.1 channel HTiB, the Panasonic SC-HT650, for $300 and last year at tax refund time I got a real 7.1 AV surround receiver (Onkyo TX-SR608), a cheap powered sub (Polk PSW10) a good but small 1080 LED backlit LCD TV (Vizio M260MV), a refurbished 3D Blu-ray disc player (Samsung BD-C6800) and along with the Panasonic speakers from the HTiB I added a pair of Aiwa bookshelf speakers I had lying around as surround back. I got these items because the HTiB didn't have a digital S/PDIF in for the TV. I will never go back to using a TV's built in speakers, and i was using my own version of a sound bar before they were commercially available, I had hooked up a good set of IBM 2.1 computer speakers and a makeshift powered sub to the TV. Movies and music just aren't the same without at least 5.1 sound. I have sound so good now that at times while watching TV or playing music or a movie I will hear a background noise and have to mute or pause it to find out if it is in the material or in real life, and all of this without having a good set of matched speakers. The only way you could make your current analog only sound bar work with your TV is to set the TV to only put out stereo PCM in the menu and then buy a S/PDIF to analog stereo converter box to go between the TV's coaxial or optical digital S/PDIF out port and the stereo analog in on the sound bar. If you do this this the sound bar will control the volume, not the TV itself. If you do ever go for true surround PLEASE place the speakers properly, I see many with the surrounds left up front or placed wrong. See: http://www.richardcleaver.com/2009/05/28/home-theater-speaker-placement/ The side surrounds should be above seated ear level so they don't sound too direct. HTiB= Home Theater in a Box
