How should I connect my line-level amp?

How do I connect my Toshiba satellite to my HDTV for picture and my AMP for sound?

So like the title suggests I want to connect my Toshiba Satellite to my HDTV for picture for which I have a HDMI cable and I want the sound to come out of the amp that I have. For the sound I have the cable that on one end is the red and white jacks and on the other is a regular head phone jacks (sorry I don't know the name of the cable) I can plug the sound cable into the headphone jack in my lap top and the other end in the amp and I can listen to music through the amp and the I can plug my HDMI cable into the port on my laptop and the other end into the TV and I can get picture but the sound comes through the TV speakers (since HDMI does both sound and picture) but when I try to do both I cannot get the sound to work through the amp. Can anyone help me and give me a walk through of sorts on how to get the sound pumping out of the awesome amp and not the bad TV speakers

You need to go to audio and select the speakers/headphone output.
