My mother has Direct TV. The box frequently loses its programming. Support is terrible. Most times she when she speaks to support, the foreign accent is so heavy she can't understand them. The only reason she has it is because cable isn't available where she lives. Sometimes, price isn't everything.

Price-wise sometimes it's better to go through your cable company so I would check that option out if that's a major deciding factor. However, DirecTV currently is the leader in HD programming due to its recent satellite launch. Currently they offer just over 70 HD channels (depending on your programming) with the capability of around 100 by the end of the year (the remaining channels still have yet to be decided). Also, as an added bonus, if you have an Intel VIIV computer all of DirecTV's H20, HR20, H21 and HR21 models are capable of file sharing. This means that you can listen to music and view your pictures on your tv through your receiver if it's connected to your computer (or network). In addition to the file sharing, currently the HR20-700 and HR20-100 models are now capable of the DirecTV On Demand feature, meaning that they are able to download (through your network) a variety of movies and shows. Currently the programming library consists of over 2,000 titles and I believe there are more to come. As for the price, DirecTV is in it's 4th quarter for programming offers. www.directv.com lists all of the programming options available and walks you through setting up your service. You can use the website to just get a general idea of how much it would cost, but here's my recommendation: *Plus HD-DVR with one receiver *Starz and Showtime free for 3 months *$10 credit for 12 months (needs mail or online redemption, is -usually- on your second bill if you submit it right away) All of this would be $69.99 for the first month and $59.99 once the programming credit is on your bill. If you want more than one receiver in your home add an additional $4.99 for each additional one, regardless of hd or dvr capabilities. The only thing you have to pay is $199 for the HD-DVR receiver (this is after a $100 instant rebate). This includes the dish and standard professional installation. If you just want HD and don't need the DVR service you can subtract about $6 from the monthly price and there is no startup cost (regular HD receivers are $99 and end up being free after instant rebate). Standard professional installation is still free (no matter what equipment you get). Just remember that it would require a 24 month service commitment (for activating advanced equipment) or a prorated early cancellation fee of up to $480 ($20 for each month not completed). Also, your equipment would be leased, so DirecTV would require that when you disconnect the receiver (as in have it removed from your bill) that you return it (free via FedEX using the recovery kit shipped to you once the receiver is deactivated on your account). If you have any other questions about DirecTV service, feel free to ask =)

It depends. You cant get some sports stations on DTV. Like in philadelphia, you can only watch the phillies if you have cable. DTV is cheaper. My cousisns had it, it was pretty good. Great picture. But it is satelite, so weather is a factor.
