Do you need an aerial to get freeview?

I need some advice on what freeview receiver to get?

  • I am wanting to get my girlfriend a freeview topset for her birthday and I am just wondering if people can give me some advice/recommend a good one? And maybe a reputable site (currys, play.com, etc) to get one from at the best possible price?

When choosing a settop box for Freeview, ask yourself if you want one that allows you to view topup TV as well. If you do, you cannot retrofit, so you need to buy the right one. Of course, the price goes up if you buy one with a topup slot. There are now some cheap ones starting at £20 without card slot, going up to around £100 for those with optical output, card slots, etc. There are more expensive ones with hard drives built in. For the very cheap ones, I would pop into Asda, Tesco or Currys and look at what's on offer. For the more expensive end, try John Lewis if you have one in town, or amazon.com.

I can't recommend a specific machine but have a look at the Richer Sounds web page for a fair choice of reasonably priced boxes.

They are all very similar ,the cheaper ones dont have the top up TV slot ,the little basic one by Matsui at Currys works well and isnt expensive.
