What's the cheapest price for an HD TV? (ANY KIND?

What kind of HD TV should I buy?

  • I'm kind of a beginner here so give me all the basics. Should I get LCD or Plasma? Should I get 720 or 1080? I think 42" is a good size for my place. What brand is best at a reasonable price?

  • Answer:

LCD and Plasma are (in my opinion) the higher end HDTVs. LCD's have come along over the past several months to be better quality and larger TV's. 1080 resolution would be best. LCD's will possibly cheaper, but since you are going with the 42" they may be close to the same price-wise. Plasma's require servicing every two years and are subject to having burn-outs. I have heard many people say that icons from channels will stay on the screen several minutes after you change a channel. The LCD doesn't have this problem. I got a 32" LCD last Christmas and have throughly enjoyed the quality and price. The next step will be to look into programming options. Many people don't realize that you must have HD programming in order to watch HDTV, otherwise you will not be as impressed with the picture quality. I use directv and love it! If you live in a larger city you may be able to get HD cable at a reasonable price as well. Good luck :) Make sure you do your price comparisions. www.cnet.com is a wonderful site that compares different electronic products.

LCDs have very breakable PLASTIC screens, No dealer no manufacture will repair under warranty or othewise. They are a piece of crap.

I still haven't made up my mind about the HD TV yet. I have been researching them but right now there are just to many variables and problems with the product that still need to be resolved. There are pro's to both LCD and Plasma, but to me the con's outweigh the pro's. I know eventually I will be getting one, but I'm waiting a bit longer.

I just bought this tv over the weekend and it's fantastic! http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8500918&st=sharp+42%22&lp=1&type=product&cp=1&id=1186004971284 It's a few hundred dollars cheaper elsewhere, but Best Buy does pricematch. I prefer to go with LCD over plasma because they last longer. I got 1080 as opposed to 720 because...well, why not? ha..go big or go home as I always say.

I bought a LCD but plasma is good too. Definitely get 1080, that is the new standard I was stuck between getting a 42" or a 48" and went with the 48" boy am I glad. At first it seemed kind of big, but now it almost seems small. I got a JVC but other brands are good too. You can get a better price by shopping online. Go to your local store and find the one you like and then compare prices on yahoo shopping.

I think LCD has a longer life than plasma, but we have a 50" plasma, and the hd picture is absolutely amazing. Ours is a Samsung, and we got ours at a very good price from Sam's Club...if you have one around.
