How do I play audio through HDMI?

How do I get my AOC TV to play audio when connecting via hdmi?

I have the AOC L42W781HS and am having a problem connecting stuff via hdmi. I have tried connecting my laptop and different dvd players via hdmi. Each time I get perfect picture but no sound. At first I thought it was settings on my laptop but that works fine on other tv's and same is happening with the dvd players. From what I have found so far I believe some tv's require you to manually select in the tv's menu to use hdmi/digital sound. Nowhere in the AOC's menu ca I find this option and its not in the instructions. I have contacted AOC support who have been less than helpful as their english is very poor and are basically sending me links to a service request and its not under waranty. I am sure that the set is not faulty but I just need to know how to turn the sound on. Thinking maybe their must be a service/secret menu in there. Any help would be much appreciated. thankyou
