Is there a DVR for over the air TV?

With digital TV, how does the public record TV shows off the air with no DVR subscription fee?

  • I've been a cable/satellite user for many years, with DVR subscriptions. How do people who only use an antenna record shows? I'm trying to help someone who has a converter box, but their VCR does not seem to recognize the signal from the coaxial out (the HDMI out is going directly to the TV). I can not seem to find any DVR that does not require some sort of monthly subscription fee. Are there any out there that work with the digital signal and has no fee?

    Look for DVD recorders with built-in ATSC Tuner. DVD Recorder-HDD combo boxes used to be very popular, but now they are very hard to find. You can always make your own with a PC+TV Tuner+ Windows media center

converter------>vcr or dvd recorder-------> TV I use the composite outputs (yellow/white/red RCA) from the converter to the VCR and/or dvd recorder, and output from the VCR to the inputs of the TV set. Not surprised the rf connection didn't work. On many converter boxes, the rf is just a pass through of the incoming signal (no conversion from digital to analog ch3). I don't have a DVR, so I can't comment wether you could make one work without subscription. If I were selling them, I would make that exceedingly difficult or impossible if I could. Its all about revenue. There are TV tuner cards available for PC's that would not only handle digital over-the-air signals, but make it possible to use your PC as a DVR. You would need a pretty capable PC with a lot of hard drive space. I'm guessing your frugal friend isn't that tech savvy.
