LG flat tv light flashes constantly?

What's wrong with my LG LCD TV?

  • Randomly, with no warning, my LG 37LB5D LCD television lost its ability to detect inputs, or so it would seem. Symptoms: Upon cutting the TV on the green LED light flashes approximately 8 times. Once it's on it says "no signal" and produces a static/humming sound with occasional high pitched whines; it's always the same volume, regardless of what level I have the TV's volume set on, including mute. It won't connect to the PS3 via HDMI, nor the 360 via Component, the Satellite (Directv), the N64, nor any other hook up. Running the automatic channel tuning yields no results even after multiple attempts. Pressing Menu brings up the menu, as expected, and the colors displayed within the menu is completely normal. The TV just won't recognize input devices. PLEASE HELP!

  • Answer:

When the green LED flashes multiple times, do you hear a clicking sound? If yes, that's a power supply relay failing to lock up due to one or more component faults on the power supply board. Failed electrolytic capacitors are a common cause. If you hear no clicking, that's different--the flashes are probably consistent, like 8 flashes, a pause, 8 flashes, etc. That's a trouble code that you can translate in the set's maintenance manual. It's telling you about a specific type of internal problem. But in either case, the set needs a trip to a repair shop. If it's in warranty, start the process.
