What is HDMI cables?

What uses male/female hdmi & dvi? Which cables to buy?

  • Hi, I am soon getting a Sony tv with 3 hdmi connections. I have a PS3 and a PC with a video card that supports an HD signal and has a DVI connection. I am very confused when it comes to male and female connections on both cables. First: to connect my PS3 what type of hdmi cable to I buy? is the tv side of the cable have to be male or female? does the ps3 side of the cable have to be male or female? Second: to connect my computer, does the the DVI side of the cable have to be male or female? does the tv side have to be male or female(i guess answered in question 1)? Now on the DVI side, I also see some cables that say DVI-D??? Your answers are greatly appreciated and I apologize for my ignorance, I tried reading wikipedia but it didnt help. Thanks!

  • Answer:

All HDMI cables are going to be male on both ends. and your PS3 and TV will have female ports. so any HDMI cable will work. Also know that HDMI cables are Digital cables so they only send 1s and 0s across the line and there is no degradation/interference possible like there is with analog cables. So don't let the sales guy (or girl) sell you a $100 HDMI Monster Cable, because a $20 one will work just as well. For your DVI cable unless your TV will have a DVI port in addition to the 3 HDMI ports, you will need to get a DVI to HDMI converter, (which is an adaptor and not a cable) and will have a female HDMI on one side and a male DVI on the other, so from your PC video card DVI port you will go to your converter, then to a standard HDMI cable then to your TV. DVI-D is digital only, which means you can't use a Digital to analog converter on it. DVI-I is Digital and Analog which means you can use a converter. and DVI-A is analog only and older (you probably won't see any of these around. Go with DVI-I just to be safe and not knowing how old your PC's video card is. Best of luck and enjoy the Blu-ray greatness Edit: yes that cable would eliminate the need for the HDMI to DVI converter (sorry I didn't see that until after I posted.
