How long does it take for a plasma TV to burn in permanently?

How long would it take for something to burn into a plasma TV?

  • I just got a plasma TV last night and I was worried about burn-in. Many channels I watch have letterboxes at the bottom and top, and the logos can cause it too. I was just wondering how long it would take.

  • Answer:

Newer plasmas are not as bad with burn-in as the older models. Phosphors have improved, and various electronic measures have been taken, including electronic orbiting of the screen picture, but you may not even notice it.. Plasma is the way to go for very wide angle viewing, (up to 170 degrees off center!) and good on fast action, (*very fast response time) excellent blacks and colors. The only CON lately, is some complain about reflections on the glass screens from windows or lights in the room.. I wall mounted mine with a slight 'tilt down' and all is well...

The potential for burn-in is greatest during the first 100 or so hours of use. You should keep contrast low (less than 50 percent) and avoid showing static images or letterbox bars on the screen for hours at a time. But for the most part it's not an issue anymore in newer plasma's. Many new plasmas include burn-in reduction features, such as screensavers and "pixel shifting" that help prevent burn-in. Some of these features are invisible to the viewer.
