Can I use DVI to RCA cable to connect my PC to my TV?

How can I connect my PC to my HDTV with DVI to HDMI cable so the sound comes out of the TV?

  • I have my PC that has a gtx 260 graphics card. It has 2 dvi outputs. I am currently using a dvi to hdmi cable to get the picture on the tv. I can't seem to get the sound. I have an RCA cable (red and white) going from my sound card to the HDMI audio input on my TV. My TV is a Vizio VW32L HDTV20A. When I first start the computer and the DVI cable is not in the speakers work for the TV, but once I plug in the DVI to HDMI it stops. Is there any way to make this work?

  • Answer:

I believe that once you plug your DVI-HDMI cable into the TV's HDMI port, the TV is expecting the audio to be traveling over that HDMI cable (which is the typical way HDMI works). You should have the ability to override the TV's defaulting to its audio from the HDMI cable by selecting a different audio input (the jacks you have the PC's audio plugged into) and continue to take the video from the HDMI input. Also, some TV's allow you to name the various ports, and in some cases if you choose something like DVI-PC for the HDMI port it will know to NOT expect its audio from there. I have that exact situation with a Samsung HDTV I use as a PC monitor and the name I cjose for the HDMI port was the key to making it work properly.
