Do you mean the same as HD-DVD. Then no, they use different software and DVD technology. A dual layer blu-ray disc can hold up to 50 GB of data while the dual layer HD-DVD can hold about 25 GB. They both use blue lasers, but that is about the only way they are the same. HD-DVD is a dead format and all new movies that come out in high definition are blu-ray. Blu-ray is high definition, if that is what you mean.
