How to reduce movie resolution?

How does the resolution of a movie screen compare to an HD 1080p TV?

  • At the last movie I saw at a movie theater the images didn't seem as sharp. Are we getting better resolution at home now at home than at the movies?

  • Answer:

Correct, most newer digital theaters project in 1080P, though older film (analog) theaters can surpass that level of resolution. There are reasons the image can look worse in a commercial theater than at home. Usually it is a calibration issue as the gear should be consistently calibrated by a professional.. That costs money and down time for the theater, they may choose not to ever, or seldomly calibrate their video system. Also, screen size and viewing distance greatly impacts the video quality. Even at the highest resolution, if you are too close to a given display size, it can look terrible. Same goes for home, it kills me to see someone with a huge new HDTV sitting 3-4 feet away from it (they usually still think it looks great though).

If it's a digital theater, then yes, it's 1080P. But even then, the contrast is likely not as good as what you get at home, and it could be out of focus. If it's a film-based theater, then the resolution of the theater is probably better, though, who's to say if the film is dirty/scratched, or out of focus.

What you see in the movies is 1920 x 1080p, just like a 1080p TV.
