How does a TV Converter Box work?
-
I have 2 TV sets, one old and one new. the new one is hooked up to directv so i don't really have to worry about buying a converter box for that. but for the older one which i have i need to buy one. it has those antennas to receive those tv signals, but once i get the converter box does it mean it needs to be hooked up by a cable to some outlet to receive DigitalTV? This older set is just set up in a small office to watch basic stuff like news, so i really don't need to get another receiver from directv. don't want extra cables laying around in that small room. especially since it means drilling some holes to get that reciever to hook up to the dish.

Coupon Qualified Converter Boxes work this way: 1. TV antenna is connected to the input of the box. 2. The TV is connected to either the channel 3 (possibly channel 4 with some) output of the box via the TV's antenna connector. 3. Optionally a TV with composite video and audio input (some single channel some left and right - depends on the box) can be connected to the matching outputs of the converter box or these outputs can be connected to a recorder's matching inputs for recording (VCR, DVD or VCR/DVD recorders without digital tuning built in). No connection is made to cable or satellite unless you want both over the air digital and cable/satellite channels for that one TV. 4. Converter Box needs to be set up per its instructions or on screen set up guide to scan channels so it knows which digital channels you can receive. You may have to repeat this or a similar procedure when new channels are added or if the power is off for too long and the box looses its memory. The converter box connects between the antenna and the TV. If your TV has a built-in antenna, and you can't access the connection between the antenna and the TV, then you'll have a problem. Right now, many of the DTV stations ate broadcasting in UHF-but not all-some are still VHF. When the changeover comes on 2/17/09, most of the DTV stations will be moving to different frequencies-many will be moving back to VHF. I've attache a link to the final channel assignments. Note that the DTV channels continue to use their analog TV channel designation, even though they may be at a different frequency (channel). This is to avoid confusing the public. So the DTV version of analog channel 2 could presently be broadcasting on UHF channel 26 and be moving to VHF channel 6 after the transition, but it will still be called channel 2. http://hraunfoss.fcc.gov/edocs_public/attachmatch/FCC-07-138A2.pdf http://www.dtv.gov/DTV_booklet.pdf

Depending on the location and how close you are to the transmitting antennas, you need a UHF type antenna to receive the signals between Channel 14 thru 69. I have one and it works great. My not so good channels are now clear on DTV.
