How do I set my plasma tv picture?

I am no TV expert. Will I really be able to see motion blur on an LCD? LCD vs Plasma! PLEASE HELP!?

  • OK I am just your average run of the mill guy. I like to Watch TV, Play video games and watch movies. I dont care about streaming netflix or anything like that, I just want the best picture for my dollar. I am asking this just after coming home from looking at a wide variety of HDTVs. I went to a store where the same image was being projected on all tvs via a coax cable, obviously not a great source of HD. I did however compare the quality of the scrambled feeds and was able to come to a conclusion. My first stop was a panasonic viera 54", I know I am going to get bashed for this but honestly, not really impressed with this tv. I heard that Panasonic makes the worlds best plasma after Pioneer, sorry didn't see it. I dont know if it's just me, but the colors of a Samsung LCD just have that "POP" to them. I was dead set on getting a plasma but now I am undecided. I guess my real question is will I really be able to detect motion blur on a well made, name brand LCD, because that really is my only concern as I LOVE to watch football in HD. I see all these things thrown in my face about 60hz 120hz and 240 hz, all I can say is with my own 2 eyes I honestly can not see the difference. What should I do? I also have noticed that more and more companies are dropping Plasma production for LCD and LED technology, is this just a coincidence? Any advice is greatly appreciated. 10 points for best answer.

Well...it's been my experience that stores will 'bump-up' the picture settings of the TVs that they want to sell! They just adjust the settings of the rest of the TVs accordingly! Some stores are more notorious then others. I've seen Plasma screens turned down so much you almost couldn't see anything. Meanwhile, their LCDs were turned up and where obviously tuned to look impressive! It's a bit of favoritism because people are more aware of LCD technology then Plasma do to the intensive ad campaigns by LCD manufacturers! The facts are, Plasma TVs have the best picture qualities! Plasma TVs have the highest "native" contrast ratios(40,000:1), giving them the blackest blacks and most vivid and rich looking colors! They also have the fastest response times(.001ms) and fastest refresh rates(600hz)! Making them the best at producing the sharpest and smoothest motion possible with content like sports, movies & gaming! Also...Plasma TVs are more affordable! For more info on both technologies, see this site: http://www.plasma-lcd-facts.co.uk/ There's nothing wrong with either type of HDTV. However...there is always a chance that you'll see motion artifacts in LCD TVs(including LED), it's an inherent flaw in the technology. Motion artifacts have never...and never will be a problem with Plasma TVs! Basically what i'm trying to get at here is that you can't trust anything you here and only half of what you see! People can...and will...find faults in anything they want to. Don't judge something by what you've seen in one store or one TV or by what a few people say! Plasma TVs(especially Panasonic's) are outstanding TVs that will perform great! Go out and get many opinions and facts from people who know what they're talking about! As for that previous answerer, Plasma TVs DO NOT have crystals! Their pixels are made up of noble gases that are electrically charged to produce plasma's that excite phosphors thus emitting light! I can't stand it when people talk bad about something they obviously don't know anything about! OH...and Plasma TVs last just as long as LCD TVs. Brand of TV is a big part in how long a TV lasts and Panasonic's have the lowest failure rate! Hope this helps!

I think the person that already answered has it exactly reversed. Plasma tvs are susceptible to image burn. This means that if left on the screen long enough, an image will be "burned" onto the screen and you will be able to see a silhouette of it even after that image is gone. Newer plasmas have a feature that supposedly erase this image though. LCD tvs are the ones that have pixels burn out, not plasmas. As far as picture goes. The better choice depends on your situation. LCDs are supposed to be better in rooms that have a lot of light. Plasmas are supposed to better in rooms that are darker. Plasmas are typically known for using more energy than LCD and they tend to put out a lot of heat. One deciding factor is that plasma prices have dropped dramatically over the past few years, making them much more affordable than they used to be. Either way, plasma or LCD, if you have a regular tv right now, the picture will look fantastic with either purchase.

LCD is so much better. They are clearer and last longer. After a few years, the crystals in a plasma TV begin to burn out and you get black dots on your TV. As LCD TVs don't use crystals they're clearer and last longer.

Each hdtv have their pros & cons Plasma is better in term of picture quality, deeper black and smoother motion and you are right,Panasonic is top brand for plasma. But more susceptible to burn-in (although this is not as much of a factor now, due to technology improvements in the past few years),more heat generation (as well as more power consumption), screen glare in brightly lit rooms, heavier weight, and more delicate to ship. LCD have advantages include no burn-in susceptibility, cooler running, less screen glare, more functional at high altitudes, longer display life (although improvements are being made in Plasma screen life), looks better in brightly lit rooms, less power consumption than Plasma. But not as good rendering deep blacks, not as good at tracking motion (although this is improving, especially with the implementation of 120Hz refresh rates (and some now offer 240Hz) on higher-end models). So there are LED which is LCD with LED Lit, great picture, deeper black, thin set and 40% less power consumption than lcd, plasma but a bit expensive. Personally, for gaming I would go with LCD,safer choice and Samsung is a great brand to get.It have great picture quality.

I see this, LCD's cost more than plasma's at those sizes and then you add the 120hz and 240hz to LCD's and LED feature all together The Plasma is much much cheaper, So the Stores will want to sell the most expensive TV's to get a comission percentage, so They will Set the LCD on Vivid to make it look stunning and the Plasma will have the picture turned way down.
