Is it worth it to buy the Sony extended warranty?

Should I buy an extended warranty when I purchase a Panasonic plasma TV?

  • I'm in the market for a 50" plasma TV and will likely buy the Panasonic TH-50PX60U model. Major stores like Best Buy and Circuit City sell extended warranty packages for $400-$500. Any thoughts on whether this fairly steep warranty is worth it? What does the manufacturer's warranty typically cover (the store tells me that it's extremely restricted)?

  • Answer:

Its not a bad deal if you look at what repair costs for plasmas cost. Consumer Reports does recommend extended policies on LCD, plasma, and MMD sets (DLP, LCD projection, LCOS, etc.). The reason is that some of the cheapest components on the tvs (fans) can cost around $400 dollars to fix, yet if something really goes wrong, throw away the set and buy another one. Ask anybody in the CE business and they will tell you the same thing.

If the Store really wants the sale........ ask them to show you the Panasonic warranty and their's. Then do a side by side comparison and see what's missing . Personnally, two years parts/one year labor is pretty lame for a $6,000 investment , and only covers defects in both. It's not insurance ( Lightning hits etc...) it's a warranty. So........what will the extended cover? Any Damage? Theft? and for How long? Three years? 4? 5? I'd want it for at least three PAST the Panasonic warranty expiration.

Most companies perform extensive research on their products to determine the warranty terms. You can bet the contract is written in the company's best interest and not yours. Also, did you know that Plasma TV's can suffer burn-in? If you watch alot of TV with a ticker across the bottom (like news or sports) you may get a burned-in image. DLP technology is a good alternative to Plasma if your interested.

Extended warrienties are always a good idea for high ticket items - unless you have enough pocket change to just go out and buy a replacement??!!
