Is higher contrast ratio always better with LCD tv's?

What do contrast-ratio and brightness specs stand for in LCD TVs?

  • For instance: Contrast Ratio 800:1; Brightness 500 cd/m2

  • Answer:

The contrast ratio is the difference between the darkest black and the brightest white. (Blacker than black to white) The larger the number the more natural gray scale you will get (Greyscale are the levels in between black and white) and it will generally result in a better picture. As to the brightness, cd/m2 stands for Candelas per meter squared. Basically it is a measurement against 'candle light' Truthfully I wouldn't worry about the brightness factor, this truly only comes into place if you will be watching the television in a VERY bright room. I would concentrate on features, connections, price, and of course which looks best for you.
