Answer:
Maybe. If you have problems with picture & sound breakup and your TV is more than a couple of years old (or cheap to begin with), then there is a good chance that one of the better converter boxes will improve things. Converters like the Channel Master and Zenith/Insignia models have tuners that are better than even the best that where being made a few years ago in regards to handling poor quality signals. Since it only costs $10 - $20 to buy a converter (after using a coupon), there is not a lot of downside risk in trying. > help me receive hd channels better.. Yes, but keep in mind that all of the coupon type converters only output SD quality which is about what you get from a DVD. If you have a big screen LCD, it's not going to have the picture detail that a HD tuner gives. External HD tuners are about $160.

If you are talking about receiving over the air ATSC (digital) transmissions, probably not. The only way a converter box would help is if your set only had an analog tuner, but most LCD televisions have digital tuners built in.

No it won't. You will only be able to receive HD channels if your new box contains a built in HD receiver. The only way that you can improve reception is to invest in a really good aerial. That will only make things better if your current reception is weak.

Generally no. Most of the "convertors" sold output only SD. You will have to look for one that has HD outputs, and the most popular ones are a couple years old, since HD sets have come with built in tuners for that long at least. For better reception, I'd look into improving your antenna.

You don't want a digital converter box (the type sold for over-the-air digital reception in the U.S. after February 17th) with your LCD TV. It's a digital set, probably high-def, and the converter's output is only standard-def analog. Assuming you're using some type of external over-the-air antenna (not cable, not satellite), your solution is a better antenna, the best one you can muster, preferably installed outside.
