In my research using Consumer Reports, CNET and any other reliable review service I could find, I ultimately decided on a Panasonic, as they consistently get excellent reviews for reliability and picture quality. Sony get good reviews for quality, but they tend to be prohibitively expensive for what you get. Samsung have also received good reviews and I've viewed several in person. They tend to be a bit cheaper. Vizio are a good budget brand. I would be wary of buying from WalMart, as I know manufacturers make special sets just for WalMart that are cheaper quality. Go larger than you think you need, you won't regret it, especially if you ever move to a larger home. I bought a 42" 1080p Panasonic for my apartment, where I sat about 7 feet away. This was slightly larger than I needed for the apartment, but then I ended up moving to a house with a much larger living room and the 42" still works great. If you get smaller than a 42", you won't get true 1080 HD resolution. The screen simply isn't big enough, even if it says it has 1080, you're better off going 720 as you won't notice any difference in a screen that small at that viewing distance and you'll save money. Once you bring your set home, one thing you'll have to do is change the viewing settings when you get the set home. Most TVs are set to a "vivid" or some similar setting, which is way too sharp and oversaturated. This works under the bright fluorescents of a showroom floor, but will look terrible in the living room. Inputs are another important factor. Try to think a bit ahead. When I purchased my set, 2 HDMI ports was fairly standard, and suited me fine. Now, however, I have to get an HDMI switcher to accomodate the XBOX, PS3, and HD cable box. Lastly, don't mount your set too high. Optimum viewing is about eye level with center of the screen when sitting down from where you watch. There are more specific guidelines you can find with a quick internet search.
