How can I get better TV reception?

How can I get a better reception from my TV antenna?

  • I have tried everything I know of to get the antenna to work better. Any suggestions? (please don't say that I should get cable or satellite)

  • Answer:

You didn't' specify rooftop or basic TV top. If you are really serious you can try a antenna rotor. Turning your antenna will point it in the direction of the TX. signal. AS stated before check or replace your antenna connections. Next is this an old or new antenna? If you have in TV top antenna, you can a amplified antenna (this is only good if you get good signals). Radio Shack carries a variety of amplified antennas. You might want to make sure that your TV doesn't have a weak tuner.

One of my teachers in high school told me that a copper wire wrapped around a strong magnet makes a pretty good antenna. Make sure that you use unshielded copper wire. You can find a strong magnet in a sub-woofer (not a new one, use a blown one). Then hook up one wire to each antenna node, or get a piece from radio shack that converts co-axel cable to the old-school style with the 2 screws. Don't do anything stupid like stick it in a power source.

s_haggard00 gave good advice and that link should be useful to you too. Also, check the antenna carefully for any corrosion between the various parts. If there is any clean it off - you may have to disassemble it to do this. Pay attention to the connections between the feeder wire and the antenna, make sure they're good. Spraying with a silicon solution, both at the metal joints and the connections, will slow down corrosion in the future. If the feeder is coaxial cable and it has been installed for a long time it may have deteriorated, especially from the ingress of water from the antenna end and through porosity in the outer sheath due to U.V. from the sun, and it might be worth replacing it.
