Why has the screen on my tv gone green and purple and can it be fixed cheaply?

  • The screen on my tv has gone green and purple. i have not had it near any magnets and i have tried adjusting the colour with the controls but it doesn't make a difference. everything is ok other than the colour. can anyone tell me what this is caused by and can i get it fixed cheaply or is it beyond repair. grateful for your answers!

It sounds like your tube Shadow Mask may have got magnetised and need to be degaussed turn off your TV at the mains and unplug it for at least two three hours after that time power up your TV it should degauss the tube at power up worth a try before you give up on it

It might not be the tube finished; the levels of red, green and blue (the three colours that are used in the tube) can sometimes go a bit wrong. On really old TV's there are three knobs inside the back that can be used to adjust the levels. On newer ones, it can be adjusted using the remote, but only after it has been put into "service mode" (often by moving a jumper somewhere on the circuit board). Either of these should be cheap enough to have done by someone with experience. Warning - The inside of a TV, especially the power feed to the tube and the transformer connected to it run at high voltages that can be extremely dangerous! Not a good idea to go opening it up unless you are experienced. Failing this get a new TV; to replace the tube will cost more than the price of a new one...

It is the colour tube that has gone, going off the prices of new TVs now, i doubt it would pay you to get the one you have repaired, when you do find a repair man they usually charge the earth for labour and parts. Also when a TV starts to go wrong, it is usually a sign that it is worn out and other things start to go wrong.

You'll be REALLY lucky if you can find anyone that still actually fixes TVs. Mine did the same & I was told the tube was gone/going - so I rang around all the shops & private people I thought likely to do TVs (starting with the likes of Curry's & ending with the bloke with an advert in the paper saying he would take old TVs off your hands!) No-one fixes them anyore - they seem to have become throw away items.

Is it the whole screen? My TV gets green and purple in the corners sometimes but it always just goes away after awhile. If you need perfect picture quality all the time then I think it would probably cost more than a new TV to get it fixed since they are so cheap now.

when mine went like that i had to get a new one cos one of the tube thingys in it had died, that is how technically minded i am.
