How to watch films on TV from USB?

I just want a TV to watch rented films, is it possible to have a TV without the TV signal?

  • I live in the UK. At the moment, I don't have a TV and use my computer to watch rented films. I've been wondering perhaps it would be nice to watch films in a bigger screen, but I'm not really interested in broadcastTV. I don't want the TV signal and I don't want to pay the TV license. Is it possible to have a TV and don't get the broadcast?

  • Answer:

I have a TV but only watch DVD's and play Wii on it. We wrote to the TV licensing people and explained that we didn't need a TV license. They said they might come and check that we weren't using it to watch TV, but they haven't yet. Just in case, don't have any ariel plugged in to the TV so that if they do inspect the place you can prove you don't use it for that purpose.

A TV license is only needed for watching BBC chanels. Thats a fact no matter what anyone else on here may tell you because we went through this getting a TV at work for training DVDs. If you can prove you don't watch BBC then you don't have to pay. If your getting a TV and don't want to pay, the best thing to do is remove any TV areals from your house. May not fully proove you don't watch it but it'll give you a good case for appeal. Not that you'd be caught because you'd have no signal to track. My choice would be to buy a bigger monitor for your computer to eliminate any possible charge no matter how unlikely.

My son has the same problem! He got a large tv set from his granny, but he found it impossible to tune in, so I gave him my old dvd player and now he sits in bed watching dvds. He does have a tv licence for his other one which has a Sky box, though. If you are not receiving a signal you're not breaking the law I wouldn't have thought?

Here is the information, from the TV Licensing people themselves: http://www.tvlicensing.co.uk/gethelp/faqs.jsp#link1 The short answer to your question is no, but you do have to detune your telly and write to the TV Licensing people to tell them the situation.

Red Rose

then you need to buy something similar to incar dvd player. most do not receive tv signal.

you need a licence for a video or DVD machine sorry, when you buy a TV you have to fill in a guarantee that is sent to TV licence company.
