What's better, a 52" LCD or a 52" Plasma TV?

  • leave the prices alone. but nowadays LCD 's are being made into bigger and bigger sizes. they look impressive too. but do you think they are as worth as the Plasmas of the same size. sony has started to make 55" and even 70" proper LCD TV's. do you think LCD's of today can match a plasma?? opinions needed. and what would you go for, a 55" LCD or PLasma??

  • Answer:

To correct a few of the utterly misinformed and misguided answers here: A typical 37" plasma will draw around 250 watts. A typical 37" LCD will draw around 200 watts. Hardly a huge difference, is it? Plasma TVs do NOT run hot. They run a lot cooler than the old style CRT (tube) televisions. Both LCDs and plasma will last for around 60,000 hours of normal viewing. Plasma and LCD televisions can both be wall mounted. LCD televisions DO suffer from screen burn - I know, I've seen it. It just takes longer than a plasma. LCDs suffer from ghosting and lag far worse than plasmas. LCD screen are plastic and easily damaged. Plasma screens are glass and much tougher. It is only the very latest, most expensive LCDs than can match a plasma for sharpness and clarity. If you want to know the truth as to why 63% of the population prefer plasmas, check out the website below.

I would go with LCD because the advantages plasma used to have no longer exist. LCD's are more reliable, use less energy, no burn-in issues, etc. And the newer LED backlit LCDs have excellent black level performance. LCD's are also better for gaming because the game HUD can permenantly burn into a plasma. So I would definitely go with LCD. It'll probably cost more than plasma but it's worth it imo.

LCD, plasma can absorb stuff like grease, plus you need special wipes for them, LCD's are made to last longer and are much better...

at this size i would opt for the plasma. although LCD technology has come on in leaps and bounds over the past couple of years in the big screen stakes plasma still has the edge in anything over 42" in terms of picture quality. just to clarify (and to reiterate twisters post)-although LCD sets enjoy a certain degree of protection from screen-burn they are not completely immune from it-i also have seen examples of burn-in on LCD sets. in terms of energy used in most sets of less than two years old the comparitive energy used is marginable at best in LCD and plasma sets and so not worth a mention. the lifespan of the two is amost identical with up to 60.000 hours of use to be expected from a good quality set-this said i mean the actual panel-not the electronics (although i would question the lifespan of the backlight in LCD sets). although newer plasma sets have greater protection from screenburn i still NEVER play my ps3 on it-thats what the LCD is for (apart from being full HD).
