What are the HDTV standards?

Why don't TV stations change their HDTV broadcasts?

  • Television stations have selected one of two HDTV formats to transmit on; 1080i60 or 720p60. This is all fine and dandy for original programming but not for movies and some cartoons that are made originally 24 frames per second. Case and point; FOX transmits 720p60 all the time and when a new episode of the Simpsons airs interlace artifacts can be seen as a side effect of telecine. The ATSC standards state 28 different standards for DTV transmissions total and 12 for HDTV specifically. So why does FOX (and all TV stations for that matter) choose to transmit at a none native frame rate when the ATSC specs are so flexible? Why do they use telecine when its not necessary? If they would just follow the ATSC standards ANY video source can be played back natively.
