Why does my TV buzz when text appears on the screen?

How can I stop my TV losing some of the picture on each side on widescreen?

  • I have a 28inch Widescreen CRT TV. About 90% of the time is is in 16:9 setting. My DVD player is set to output the picture at 16:9 and my satellite decoder is also set to output at 16:9 - so, this being so, why do I lose about and inch of the picture on the left and the right of the screen? I understand about the black bars. They're not a problem. But some of the picture either side just drops off. For example - I watched Alien vs Predator on TV the other night, during the first few seconds when the Weyland Satellite is scanning the Earth, a text dialogue appears in the bottom left hand corner. It's obvious that it says "Weyland Industries", but even with the sky box at 16:9 & TV at 16:9 it actually reads "Veyland Industries", because a small portion of the picture is lost. In auto ratio mode it's fine, but the screen shrinks to be a square picture no bigger than that on a 21 inch TV, which is a little bit...well...pants...to be honest. Anyone know how to deal with this?

  • Answer:

This is called overscan and was a bigger problem with CRT sets than it is with PDP sets. This is just because of the way the picture is generated. On your CRT set, the electron gun has no idea where the screen is. It must be calibrated to properly align itself to generate a picture which fits the screen. On a LCD/Plasma set the pixels are fixed and therefore their position is "known". Because of this they will have exactly the same picture from set to set. Your only option is try to calibrate it better. You can get this done professionally. Or you can look up the way to get into the "service menu" of your TV. This should be able to be found through google for most sets. From here you can make changes which will change the picture and geometry of the TV. BE CAREFUL because once these settings are changed, there is no "load defaults". It is recommended you write down all the settings prior to making any changes.

Is it like this on all programs? Sometimes the tv stations over scan when doing telecine. You need to try reducing the width, if you have such a contol on your set.
