How to make my photos look really good with Gimp?

How to make regular pictures look like SLR photos in GIMP?

  • I recently bought an Ultra-Zoom camera (here's a picture of the camera, it's the Fujifilm Finepix S3280): http://images.pricerunner.com/product/300x300/257997286/Fujifilm-FinePix-S3280.jpg I have GIMP the photo editing program, but I don't really know what to do to make my pictures look like that high quality DigitalSLR type picture. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The camera you have is more than capable of making those high-quality shots, although I must stress that equipment is not everything! Your camera has full manual controls on it. I advise that you take some time to learn how to use those controls, because that will give you a lot of control straight out of your camera. Once you get good at taking photos, you'll find that your photos will begin to look more and more professional each day. Start experimenting with the settings of your camera by going hiking in the woods. take photos of beautiful scenery. Scenery is stationary, and gives you all the time you need to figure out how to get your shot just right. As you get more comfortable with the settings on your camera, begin to move on to other types of shots. Check out this website - it's a wonderful website that will teach you how to master your camera: http://www.digital-photography-school.com/digital-photography-tips-for-beginners Take it slow, read the material and learn the camera. I hope this makes some sense. I do teach gimp tutorials and would be happy to help you with more specific issues as you learn your camera. You cannot "edit" high resolution. The sensor on your camera is over fifteen times smaller than a high resolution dSLR sensor. You can learn how to use your camera to get the best exposures and you can learn how to compose your images well, so you don't end up cropping wasted space from your images

That camera is perfectly capable of taking "high quality SLR-like photos," you just need to know how to get the most out of it. If you haven't already, read through the manual - yes, it's boring, but you'll be glad you did later - head to your local library and pick up some basic photography books on exposure and composition. Don't rely on the camera's "Auto" mode, learn how to shoot in the P,S,A,M modes and use the camera's flexibility to your advantage. Gimp can help with minor stuff, but you can't edit a photo in to "high quality" unless the quality is already there.

Although it won't do miracles, you can get the most dynamic range from a camera by turning down the contrast. That makes the pictures look a bit dull coming out of the camera. In The GIMP go to Colors and then Levels to tighten up the range as needed. It can be a good idea to turn down sharpening in the camera. That can leave the images looking a little soft, but it minimizes sharpening artifacts during editing. In The GIMP you could turn up the sharpening a little after doing your other editing. That is under Filters-->Enhance-->Sharpen.
