Which is the better lens?

Which (Rebel XT, 8mp) camera lens is a better walk around, "everyday" lens: 18-55mm kit lens or Sigma17-70mm?

    I'm going to suggect a different, perhaps overlooked lens - the Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 lens. I bought this one as a replacement for the crappy Canon 18-55, and just love it!! It's very sharp at all focal lengths, right to the edges of the frame. The colours are perfect, not too saturated but a good slightly warm colour. And of course the constant aperture of F2.8 is so very handy in low light conditions. Go with the Sigma, or even look at a Tamron. I have a couple of Tamron lenses, and they are the best I own. I've had Canon, Sigma, and Quantanary too, but the Tamron is the clearest and has the least amount of barrel distortion or other distortions.
