How do I get a digital tacho card?

How big of a memory card should I get for my digital camera?

  • I know they say to get the biggest you could afford, but I was wondering if anyone could give me some numbers. How many pictures will fit on a 1gb? 2gb? 4gb?

  • Answer:

Some digital cameras are limited to the size of memory card they will accept. In general most newer point and shoot cameras will accept up to a 2GB card. With that in view, I would suggest you buy a few 2GB cards to carry around. I just bought some for $18 each. Not too bad for that much storage. The picture count for cards of that size is camera and choice dependent. Look on your camera with the card you have in it now (no photos on it) and it should give you a number of exposures left on the card. Just do the math .... if a 512mb card will give you 150 images then a 2GB card will store 600.

I definitely recommend price shopping to get the best deal on memory cards. A generic name is just as good as a name brand memory card, so that will also be a bit cheaper. Also depends on how much you're going to be using the camera, how large your pics will be, etc. will determine what is the best size memory card to get. Depending on how you format your memory card, you can get quite a bit of space for picture/video storage on the memory cards. 256mb can hold up to approx. 300 pics or so, 512mb can hold up to 500 pics or so, 1g's can hold approx 1000 pics or so, 2 g's can hold over 1300 pics or more. I don't think I've heard of a memory card that is larger than 2g's, if there is, then it's probably a specialized ordered memory card with probably a salty price tag attached to it. The approx. cost: 1g's- $15, 2g's-$30 Lexar is a good inexpense brand for memory cards. I paid around $30 for the 2g Lexar memory card. Canon, Polaroid, Memorex, etc. are all good brands, but are more costly. Watch for sales too! Here's another good tip to remember: a quick way to download your pics from your memory card is to use a smart media memory card reader. It downloads the pics alot faster to your desktop. Downloading pics directly from your digital camera puts alot of excess wear & tear on your digital camera & takes longer to download your pics to the desktop. The cost is fairly inexpensive at around $20 with up to 4 slots on some so you have a choice for different types of memory cards . Hope this helps. Happy picture taking!

It depends on what type of camera you have and the megapixels. My camera is a 10.2 megapixel digital SLR and I have a 2 GB card. It holds about 250 pictures in JPG mode. If you have a regular point-and-shoot (the little handheld cameras), a 2 GB card can probably hold between 250-300 pictures, again depending on the amount of megapixels of you camera. If you're looking to buy a 1 GB card, just divide the amount I gave you by two. If you want a 4 GB, then just multiply by two.

If you have a point and shoot, no video . . . 1BG is good enough. If you have a point and shoot with video or SLR(35mm) then get a 2BG memory card. Don't go bigger. Just get another card for more memory. If you have problems with a 4GB card, you lose all those photos. Check the Sunday newspaper for ad sales, you can get a Scandisk cheap somewhere.
