Which point and shoot camera takes good indoor pictures?

Advanced Point & Shoot or Nikon D40?

  • I've been wanting a nice camera that takes very good pictures, but I'm not sure if getting a Nikon D40 would be a waste of money, since I'm not planning on buying any special lenses in addition. If I'm planning on not getting special equipment for the D40, should I just get an advanced Point & Shoot like the Olympus SP-570UZ or Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28K? I just want a good quality camera with good shutter speed. Thanks for any advice. :)

  • Answer:

The Nikon D40 is the best for your needs 100%. The Nikon D40 has a very fast shutter speed as any other camera point and shoot (no matter if it's advanced or not) does not...all point and shoot cameras have shutter lag as DSLR's do not. The Nikon D40 is better at macro than P&S cameras but if you even want better macro you will have to buy a different lens. You don't need to buy any other lens if you don't want to but for your needs i think the Nikon D40 would be so much better than the point and shoot cameras you posted!

If you have the money and don't mind the bulk, get the D40. Even if you never change the lens in your life or never use any of the manual features you'll find that your pictures come out better with the D40. The D40 has a sensor that is 15x larger than a point-and-shoot sensor. This results in pictures that are rich in colour and are rarely grainy. The D40 also has very low shutter lag so the picture will take pretty much as soon as you press the button. This is not to say you can't take good pictures with a point-and-shoot, it's just a little harder to.

What do you want? P&S cameras are basically programed, automatic camera's, leaving little control to the user. DSLR's (D40) are fully adjustable cameras, but can be shot automatically until the user become aquainted with their controls. There are two huge pluses on the side of the DSLR's, 1) their sensors are over15 times larger that a P&S camera, so have higher resolution and 2) can use lenses from fisheye to extreme telephoto
