Sandisk 4gb SD card problem: what do I do?

  • I bought a Sandisk secure-digital 4-gigabyte memory card for my camera. It's the standard blue card, no "extreme" or "ultra," etc. I used the card with 0 problems for two weeks, then I took it up north on vacation. The camera suddenly stopped reading the card halfway through the trip. The screen said "this card cannot be used. it may be damaged"; the camera menus were disabled, I can't reformat the card or anything. I did nothing to compromise the card, no bumps, water, or abuse of any kind. The card isn't recognized in my card reader now (I get a "please insert disk" message), but it worked fine before the trip. The card crashed with 300 photos on it. I bought a new 1-gig card for the rest of my vacation which works fine in the camera. If the card is dead so be it, but I don't want to lose those photos. It's too late to get a refund/exchange: the card didn't mess up until after the trial period. Who do I take the card to? How can I extract the photos? Please help! I live in NYC.

Did this card come with - and did you install - the Sandisk image recovery program? Maybe that only comes free with the higher level cards, but I don't know. You may be able to download the software at sandisk.com or you might try http://www.datarescue.com/photorescue/v3/index.htm for their image recovery software. I have never used it, but it is mentioned here frequently. If you have taken more pictures or deleted more images, the chances are slim that you will be successful, though.

The card could still be good, at various times certain cameras stop reading cards. My kodak camera sometimes stops reading my card and says its damaged, but when i insert it into my pc it works fine. Your card could still be good, try to get a cheap card reader and see if you can upload the pics onto the pc directly.
