Lens for camcorders that elongates z-axis?

I always see pics taken with a DSLR (particularly of the inside of a room in a house in adverts for the house) that make it look longer in the third dimension (forward and backward) my friend who is a photographer says it's probably just a wide angle lens, but I've tried them an they don't have the same effect. Help? My camcorder's lens diameter is 37mm.

It's not the diameter it's the focal length. Low numbers mean wider.You seem to be referencing the filter thread.
