Is flash memory worth it?

What is the difference between SD Flash, SD card Flash, DVD Flash, Memory Stick, HD Hard Drive and SDHC?

  • And which is best for a video camera?

  • Answer:

SD Flash and SD card Flash are just different ways to refer to the "Secure Digital" standard of memory cards. SDHC is basically the newer version of that standard that supports far greater capacities. Memory Stick is Sony's proprietary competing flash memory format. Hard Drive means it has a magnetic drive inside, similar to the one in your computer. DVD Flash probably means it can use both Mini DVDs and/or also one of the flash memory formats. When it comes to video space is crucial. Hard Drives and MiniDVDs are the most economical methods of storage. Hard Drives will supply you with more storage space, but that storage space is technically finite and so eventually you'll need to offload your videos to something else. Mini DVDs on the other hand can be swapped out as they're filled. Which is better boils down to just how much video you plan on recording. ---- To the best of my knowledge, "DVD Flash" isn't a format. They're two completely different storage methods. However there are cameras that give you the choice to use either Mini DVD or flash memory. You would need to purchase whichever you planned on using though, yes. Oh, and MiniDVDs are available in both write-once (-R) and rewritable (-RW) versions.
