Do they make any SLR cameras that shoot video?
-
Well, ok here's the story. My boyfriends mother used to own a photography, I figure one day she may get back into it, anyways, she knows a lot about photography and Ive always like photography. She knows that I like it, I told her last night. I really want her to teach me about cameras ect. I really really want to get into photography and take pictures, but I also want to make videos, so me question is do they make any SLR cameras that shoot videos?

Answer:
Several digital SLRs from Nikon, Canon and Pentax offer the ability to shoot video. That said, DSLRs don't handle like a video camera and most shooting with these units needs to be done from a tripod or other solid mount. The built-in microphones tend to pick up all sorts of noise from the camera body itself. This includes the sound of the autofocus motor in the lens or body. So an external mic is a must for decent audio quality. Unless you plan to be a real cinematographer and record you audio seperately along with the required post production work, most people are better served by a dedicated video camera. At anyrate, depending on your budget and/or what lenses you might have already, the following SLRS offer HD Video recording capability: Canon EOS 1D Mark IV ($5000) Canon EOS 5D Mark II ($2700) Canon EOS 7D ($1700) Canon EOS 500D/Rebel T1i ($650) Nikon D3s ($5000) Nikon D300s ($1700) Nikon D90 ($800) Nikon D5000 ($650) Pentax K-7 ($1100) Pentax K-x ($550)

You seemed to have mixed up alot of terms here, but I think I understand what you are getting at. Regular SLR (single lense reflex) type cameras do not shoot video, only film. I think what you want are the newer DSLR (Digital single lense reflex) type cameras. And in that case, "yes", just about any digital camera can shoot a video or capture mode. Even moderate to highend point and shoot type cameras have the ability to capture a video stream. Some with and some without sound. Some have a time limitation to the video files it can create while others use highly compresses formats like MP4's. Make sure the camera you select can capture / record video, and make sure you find out what format that video is saved in, and if there is a sound option or other limitations.

There are, but buying one expecting to be able to make quality videos is like trying to buy a "family sports car". It is a compromise. Having produced videos using proper video cameras and testing DSLR's with video, shows some real weaknesses, especially when it comes to producing broadcast quality video and high quality sound. The broadcast quality video cameras use three CCD's which makes up for the poor less than 2 mp available on a DSLR when shooting HD video and usually more than one option for connecting professional microphones However if you really want to do that, you can look here and do some research. http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/compare_post.asp

Yes. The Canon 7D and 5D Mark II both shoot video. I don't know which Nikon models shoot video, but I know some do. To those who say the quality of video on a DSLR is not good, look at these videos: http://wiki.planet5d.com/index.php?title=Mkii_video_samples
DSLR video is a creative tool... NOT a viable alternative to an actual video camera. There are several DSLR's that shoot video... even HD video. However you have to realize that as of now (an most likely for the foreseeable future) video via an DSLR is just a creative tool. It's not designed or meant for shooting video the way that an actual video camera is. It's geared more toward creative snippets of video using creative lighting and having the flexibility of lenses etc. Here is a wonderful example of what can be done with DSLR video from one of my Flickr contacts; http://www.flickr.com/photos/slashstyle/3531024374/ However the vast majority of DSLR videos are choppy, awkward and very un impressive. IMPORTANT NOTE : One very important thing to note is that none of the major DSLR cameras allow you to use the auto focus in video mode. Believe me you wont want to manually focus while trying to keep your kids in shot. This may sound odd but to be honest Sony is the only DSLR brand that even employs its primary auto focus system in Liveview mode let alone full video mode. ----- Some DSLR's with Video. Several of the new generation of digital SLRs do, albeit not as well as video camers designed for that purpose. Most of the familiar makes at the middle to upper range will have the capability. The problem is the memory available to store the video. The SLRs don't have hard drives, so the storage is limited to the internal memory or memory cards. Video eats up huge chunks of memory, and card access is slow, so the video won't be that great. You'll be better of with a good digital video camera with a hard drive.

Hey, Yes, DSLRs today can shoot video. Maximum is Full HD, tho I don't see a reason to go to 2k. Canon & Nikon Models: - Canon EOS T1i - Canon EOS 7D - Canon EOS 5D Mark II - Canon EOS 1D Mark IV - Nikon D5000 - Nikon D90 - Nikon D300s - Nikon D3s If you want to buy one of these but don't know which, I have wrote an article on my blog called 'Which Video DSLR should I buy'. What's important and which models and why, I recommend them. You can read it here - http://the-digital-photographer.blogspot.com/2009/12/which-video-dslr-to-buy.html
