What's the best compact HD video camera?

What's a good HD video camera?

  • I like to make short films and YouTube videos that vary from sketches, vlogs, music videos etc. I am really into film making and my camera that I have had for about 3 years gave up on me a couple of weeks ago, but I have been wanting to upgrade to a better video camera anyways. One that shoots in 1080p HD and has an audio input to connect an external microphone to, preferably records on to a memory stick. Since I am starting to develop more in film making, I need a camera that has these things and looks some what professional. I'm 17 and I don't make a bunch of money so my budget would probably be, no more than $500 (including taxes and any other fees). Any suggestions?

For youtube and a low budget I would highly recommend using a flip, they are very easy to use (click and drag files) no cables, rechargeable, cheap, durable and shoot in HD. When I started out on youtube I wanted high quality so I used the original flip and have kept upgrading them as new versions came along.

How about choosing Canon Vixia HF S200 Though they're an excellent trio of camcorders, the Vixia HF S21, HF S20, and HF S200 are significantly more expensive than their respective competitors, especially since the S20 and S200 lack electronic viewfinders. If you can forgo some of the subtleties of the manual controls, you can probably get what you need with a cheaper camcorder. this is proven to be very cool on doing shooting films

Can't beat a GoPro (no focusing/zooming of course) but the image quality is incredible and the lighting and "real life like" effect is simply breath taking. Otherwise you'd be looking at HD Camcorders with optical zoom

The one

Go with Canon VIXIA HF R20 Full HD Camcorder its a good one Excellent 20x optical zoom lens produced very sharp video in adequate lighting. This means outdoor daytime, and bright indoor lighting.. There is a 28x "advanced" setting and 400x digital zoom. The advanced zoom is supposed to yield more zoom without compromising image quality. I'll stick to optical zoom myself, but it's a nice feature if you're into zooming. Auto Exposure worked very well outdoors, exposing bright scenes and shaded ones very well, and smoothly transitioning between the two. Indoors, I was less thrilled, because even during the daytime indoors, the video seemed a wee bit contrasty.
