Answer:
What copycat says is all good. Manufacturers know that the amount of Megapixels on the packaging helps sell cameras, with compacts they now cram more and more pixels onto the same size chips which actually increases noise! 6 to 8 mp is the sweet spot in a compact. Any more will be a waste. Buy a good brand, from a traditional camera manufacturer like Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Olympus, avoid brands that are more 'jack of all trades' like Samsung, Casio etc.

Using the pixel count on a camera as the criteria for finding a high quality camera is what the marketing folks want. It seems that everyone is stuck on the pixel count of sensors. Pixel count is one of four factors that can help you determine the quality and resolution you can expect from a digital camera. In order of importance: * Quality of the lens * The quality and sophistication of the analog to digital converter within the camera. * Sensor size * Pixel count More on pixel counts: http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/mpmyth.h... Unless you want poster size prints a 6 meg will more than do the job. There are 3 classes of digital cameras, the consumer viewfinder ones that sell for $300 or less, the prosumer SLR and DSLR ones that sell for $1000 or less and the professional ones that sell for over $1000. The consumer units don't have removable lenses and it is some times hard to use the view screen in bright sun light or low level ambient light. The DSLRs seem to have a shutter lag problem over their SLR counterparts but generally sell for a bit less. In the prosumer class don't sell the not so big brand names short. You will (in the long run) get far more bang for your buck going with a Pentax, for example, than the over hyped and over priced Cannon's and Nikon's.

Depending on the size you want to print, you can use a quality 3.2MP camera to get good prints. I have a 5MP camera that makes great images, even printed on 8.5X11 glossy paper. Don't forget, the printer is a major factor in printed quality. Beyond that, anything above 5MP will work well. Most cameras today will be 8MP or above and still only cost around $100. Just stick with a known brand like Olympus, Nikon, Canon, Sony, Sanyo, Kodak, Fuji, etc. Ignore digital zoom, it will ruin you images, focus on optical zoom.

it doesn't matter about megapixels. the amount of megapixels determines the size of the picture (higher the bigger)--ex: the sony dsc-t200 (8 megapixels) has better quality than its successor, the t300 with 10 megapixels--(according to a review by cnet.com). the high megapixel cameras often include extra features that could turn out better pictures like image stablization or face detection. what matters more is the photo quality of the actual camera (look at review sites like cnet.com), as well as the conditions of the photo (like lighting)

Anything below 5.0 is gonna look like crap pretty much. The image res. will be so low it will look horrible if you try and print them out. The standard now is around 7.0, on most cameras this will deliver good med/high res photos. However, there is more to taking good, high quality photos than megapixels. I think the 7.0 on most trusted camera brands, Canon, Sony, etc. will serve you just fine. A great camera is the Canon Powershot A620.

Answer: If you're looking for enlargements. Pictures taken with higher Megapixel digital cameras (4, 5 and 6 for example) contain more information. These pictures can be printed at larger sizes before they start looking fuzzy. The more Megapixels you want, the more you'll have to pay. Digital Camera Buyers Guide Tip: If you're a casual user who wants to email some pictures to friends and family and print off some 5x7 inch pictures a 2 Megapixel camera will be fine. Anything higher than 3 Megapixels may not be worth the money for a casual user. You won't notice any difference in picture quality of 5x7 inch prints or on your computer screen with more than 3 megapixels. Of course there are exceptions... If you're a professional and have a real need for the sharpest picture available you'll want to go for as many Megapixels as the budget allows. As you move up the Megapixel chain the cameras will have more manual controls and add-ons like interchangeable lenses. You'll also be able to develop big enlargements of your best pics. One more tip... There's more to a good digital camera than Megapixels. Good lenses and computer sensors also play key roles in image quality. Make sure you're getting these by sticking with the top manufacturers (Canon, Olympus, Fuji, Nikon, Sony and Kodak for example). OK, let's summarize: Resolution......Email&WebSites.... 5"x7" ....8"x10" .. 11"x14" 1 Megapixel...... Yes .............. -............ -...................... - 2 Megapixel........ Yes..........
