What is the difference between these digital camera formats?

Can anyone explain the difference between the digital RAW image format and the other available camera formats?

  • Answer:

As the others have said, RAW files are larger because they have all the shooting information in them. This equals out the highest setting on cameras, and meaning the best. People who shoot in RAW usually post process their images. Jpeg are smaller formats compared to RAW, because they discard some information, depending on the settings; basic, fine, extra fine usually. Extra fine being the best. With Jpegs, post processing is more difficult and images aren't as crisp. Though, the highest setting Jpeg is usually hard to distinguish between RAW images.

I love this quote from Ken Rockwell: "If you have to ask then just shoot JPG." http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/raw.htm RAW photography is not for a beginner to worry about. See http://www.dpreview.com/learn/?/key=RAW for a clear definition and http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d200/quality-settings.htm for reasons why you don't need to worry about it for now. It stores EVERY BIT of information from your photography, which might help you do some adjustments once you are very savvy with Photoshop or other image editting programs.

I was excited to shoot RAW when I got my Nikon D40x, only to find out that I had no use for RAW. I now shoot JPEG at the best setting. Disadvatages or RAW: Big file sizes, your memory card fills up quickly, time consumed to transfer from camera to computer takes almost 5-10 times longer.

RAW is when the camera saves all the data collected by the cameras sensor. JPEG compresses only certain data from the sensor that you tell it to in the cameras menu As you reduce the resolution and quality of the JPEG, the less information is saved to the memory card. So, If you spent a lot of money on a good camera, saving images a low resolution sort of defeats the purpose of having a good camera

In my experieince, RAW gives me more detail (maybe 25%) and about a stop less noise. This is not insignificant. BUT... I only see this improvement when I use Abobe Camera Raw to open the files. So the answer is...it can give you noticeably better pix, but it probably depends on the software.
