Nikon is the choice of pro's, but the pro cameras are very expensive. They also have a good range of beginner and enthusiatic amateur DSLR's in their range. Same goes for Canon, Pentax and several other brands. The best one is the one that feels best to you. Get your hands on several competing models. Nikons are mostly compatible with older Nikkor lenses. Canon and Pentax have lesser backward compatibility, limiting your ability to use second hand lenses. Remember, whichever you choose, you are more responsible for the quality of the phots you take, so learn as much as you can.

In my opinion, it all depends on whether you want to bother with having to take films in for processing and waiting for them to be developed. Then if you have a picture you would like more than one copy of, you have to have more made and wait for that. I find that I take a lot more pictures than I used to when I used only film. I can see them immediately and print as many as I care to. They both have their advantages, but I don't use film anymore since I got digital cameras.
