Answer:
For DSLRs, I suggest the Canon Rebel XS, XSi, or T1i ( http://usa.canon.com/ ). They are all good cameras, from what the reviews say (I clearly am a Canon fan, so I cannot speak for Nikon or other brands). The XS is the cheapest, and there is a fairly large gap between it and the XSi. The XSi and the T1i are comparable, and the greatest differences are the ~$100 difference, and the fact that the T1i has Creative Auto mode (good for beginners) and video recording, while the XSi doesn't. The 12.2 vs. 15.1 Megapixel difference is not really that great, according to online research. The amount of zoom is purely dependent on the lens you buy. You can either buy a kit which comes with both the body and the lens (and some other stuff), or you can choose your own lens. Compare carefully, because the lenses all seem very similar at first glance. Finally, be sure to read up on all the camera terminology you'll need to know. It'll be important when you go searching on Google for stuff (whether it be pictures, help, recommendations, etc.).

DSLR cameras do not have zoom. The level of zoom for a DSLR depends on the lens you happen to have attached at the time. Look at these: Canon XSi Canon T2i Nikon D3000 Nikon D3100 Be sure to read a book or two about DSR cameras and lenses so you have a better idea about them before you spend hundreds of dollars on a camera you don't know how to use.

Canon T1i, T2i, XS/1000D, 60D Nikon D3100, D5000, D90, D7000 All these cameras are best from the range of beginner through intermediate. Remember, photography skills & lens play a much bigger role than the actual camera body.

I've only had a Canon and an Olympus digital camera and they are both really great brands and have zero complaints when it comes to my experiences with both.. Depending on how much you are looking to spend, I would first consider your price point. You can end up spending hundreds in the end on a camera. I would start by checking out this selection of cameras, http://www.digitalimaginghq.com/all-digital-cameras.html There are Canon, Olympus and Pentax brand cameras that cover a ton of price points. Best of luck on your search! :)

I would consider Canon EOS Rebel T2i 18 MP CMOS APS-C Digital SLR Camera * 18.0-megapixel CMOS (APS-C) sensor; * DIGIC 4 image processor for high image quality and speed * ISO 100-6400 (expandable to 12800) for shooting from bright to dim light; * enhanced 63-zone, Dual-layer metering system * Improved EOS Movie mode with manual exposure control and expanded recording 1920 x 1080 (Full HD) * Wide 3.0-inch Clear View LCD monitor; * Dedicated Live View/Movie shooting button * New compatibility with SDXC memory cards, * Plus new menu status indicator for Eye-Fi support
