What is the cable called that attaches a digital camera to the computer for downloading pix?

  It is a USB cable. But you have an alternative to using a USB cable to connect you camera to your computer and is safer. If you have lost the cable, don't buy another one. Get a Card reader which once connected to the computer, you don't need to remove it. You just need to remove the memory card from your camera and insert it into the card reader. If you are using you camera to connect to your computer for downloading images, once the battery runs out, there is 90% chance that the memory card will be corrupted and you will loose the pictures. A card reader is probably cheaper than buying a usb cable in my knowledge. A USB cable will cost you £15 and card readers cost only £10.
