How is a zoom aperture fixed?

Can i change aperture on minimum zoom?

  • Canon s95 have f1.8(w) and f4.9(T) aperture values. I just wonder if it is available to set aperture value to f8.0 at wide. As i understood, f1.8 stands it has maximum aperture of f1.8 but it can be reduced to f11 at the minimum zoom level of 28mm.

  • Answer:

If you have aperture control you should be able to set any available f/stop at any zoom position. Remember however that as a lens is zoomed in the f/stop goes up. At say full zoom out a lens may be f/1.8 but at full zoom in it could be f/3.8... get my meaning? When a lens is zoomed in that cuts down on the amount of light that can get in thus lowering the f/stop.
