Can I charge my camera with a USB cord?

Is it possible to charge your digital camera with the USB cord?

  • I just recently bought the Kodak EasyShare 7.1MP Digital Camera - Midnight Blue (M753) from Target. It did not come with a battery charger, but did come with a USB cord. However, whenever I try to charge it with my PC, it doesn't work. Do you think I have to buy a charger separately? Any one have this problem and better yet has the same camera and know what to do?

  • Answer:

Check your camera's manual. If you can do it, it will say so there. I seriously doubt it, though. I have two devices that can charge that way; an mp3 player and a pda. Both are small and don't use nearly the battery power that a digital camera does. And both take a long time to charge from the usb port on the computer.

Your camera is supposed to charge with the USB cord. Per the Kodak website: "USB charging via USB cable" http://www.kodak.com/eknec/PageQuerier.jhtml?pq-path=11143&pq-locale=en_US You should go back to Target and exchange the camera for one that charges. It might just be the cable. EDIT: All USB connections are powered. However, not all devices put out sufficient power, particularly older notebook computers. That's why some USB add-in cards came with an AC adapter for the PCMCIA slot. If you've got a hub, and are plugging the camera into a hub, that might also be the issue. Plug the camera directly into the USB port on the computer and not via the hub (unless the hub is powered with its own AC adapter). Second edit: I don't know why two people say it can't be done. It's quite clear from Kodak's website that: 1) no charger is included with the camera and 2) USB charging is possible with this particular camera. Telling the asker to "read the manual" and insulting him/her doesn't help them and only exposes your own lack of research.

Anthony h gave you the correct answer. To the defense of the other answers, in MOST cases, digital cameras do not charge with the USB cable. This particular Kodak model does, however, which kind of threw some others for a loop! I would suggest though that you purchase the optional dock or AC adaptor to charge the camera. You are already seeing the problems USB charging can have, (and one reason most cameras are not charged this way). With an external charger life will be much easier for you! :-) steve

The USB cord is for copying your image files to your computer. You had better check ... Li-ion battery powered cameras all come with chargers ... in your cameras case, a Kodak Lithium-Ion & charger http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/compare_post.asp?method=sidebyside&cameras=kodak_m753&show=all

If what the guy said above is correct, that your camera charges via USB then the problem may not be the camera but your PC. Not all USB ports on a PC can power or recharge. I would check with your PC manufacturer support site and check it out. Good luck!!

Some cameras do allow for being charged vis USB cable now. Some USB ports are "powered" USB ports, meaning they are designed to help with this. A normal USB most likely will not work. I would call Kodak help line and ask them about a dedicated charger.

No Unless you don't understand the two letter word. The USB is connected to your digital camera and your printer/PC/laptop for image transfer. Read your Kodak manual.

That camera is supposed to come with a charger. Take it back to Target and get the charger. But first look through the box thoroughly to make sure you haven't overlooked it. Look at the site fhotoace listed. Way down at the bottom, it says it comes with a battery and charger.
