Eletronic vs Optical View Finder in a DSLR?

  • What do you think of Panasonic 3/4 system DSLR Eletronic View Finder, you think is better than other optical view finder? I was amaze how much view a eletronic view finder has.

    Having used a viewfinder on an SLR for 38 years I cannot understand how anyone would want to use any other method of looking at a scene. The new "micro 4/3" cameras with their electronic viewfinder is an alien concept to me. From my reading about them they don't refresh instantly so its difficult to use one to follow a moving subject. Sony suggests using the Live View on their A330 & A 380 cameras like you would the viewfinder on an old-school Twin Lens Reflex - keep your elbows in tight against your body and look down at the screen. I'll just continue to look through the viewfinder and see exactly what the lens "sees" in real time.

On a DSLR there is the viewfinder and on some models a live view mode where you look at the LCD screen. The whole point of a Digital single lens reflex camera is that it has a mirror that looks through the lens and you can see what the lens sees. The viewfinder on a DLSR is a mirror system. It is by definition not electronic. You may be thinking of the LCD screen. If so the LCD screen is worse. It takes up battery life and the sun can cause glare making it hard to see. It's just not how you use a DLSR camera. A point and shoot camera has an electronic viewfinder and the quality is horrible. You can't see anything. An optical viewfinder is always the best. I'm not sure what you were asking, perhaps your English is not very good. But I hope the information I have given can help you. -Andrew.

I have to stick with the optical for most my shots. LCD displays are good for data, histogram, etc.
