Answer:
The camera you use will be based upon the quality video you are planning to produce. If for YouTube, just about any video camera will doe, even using the video feature of an inexpensive P&S can work if you block your scenes well. There are some good DIY videos on YouTube, and I will suggest you contact them directly and ask them about their setup to see what they are using. But for a base understanding of what kind of equipment you might find useful and some idea of what basic hardware you may need, here is the following from my experiences. Generally the most cost can be found in the post production equipment which will include the software as well as the hardware which will not only include a good, fast desktop computer, with a lot of ram and large hard drive (a RAID tower for real time editing), but also some kind of sound editing hardware do you can add voice, music and Foley. Here is an example of a small production company I was a partner in a few years ago. Camera: Canon XL-1 (around $6,000 with sound package) Editing package: (around $40,000 with software) The numbers are only to show you that the cost of the camera will be a minor consideration when compared to your post production setup. If I were making YouTube videos, I would probably pick an inexpensive camcorder like one that uses mini-DV tape (under $350 for a good Canon, JVC, Panasonic or Sony), sturdy tripod and a couple of good incandescent lights (Lowel Tota-lights work very well and are very portable (Another $350) http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/248530-REG/Lowel_TLKQ_Tota_Light_Two_Light_Kit.html A software like Adobe Premiere Elements 4 (under $110) should give you all the necessary tools for editing your video. Right now you can find computer towers with 6 GB of RAM and a 320 GB hard drive for under $700 when on sale ... all you will have to do is add a descent 20 inch wide screen LCD monitor and digi-pad and a few extra hard drives (1 TB drives are under $110 on sale) and you should have nearly 90% of what you will need to start producing videos.
