What is frame movie mode?

Manual Aperture Settings in Movie Mode on Canon 7D?

  • I've always chuckled at the idea of a movie mode on a D-SLR until I saw some footage the other week. With shallow DOF and heavy colour grading you'd almost be forgiven for thinking the footage was 35mm film. My question though is this, can you alter the aperture settings in movie mode? for example if you've a 50mm F/1.4 lens attached to your 7D, can you change the F-stop to say F/2 or F2.8 while in movie mode so more or less light can enter the frame?

  • Answer:

Yes. And you can adjust the shutter and the ISO and the white ballance. The down side is not a lot of audio control or headphone socket for monitoring. I am getting a 7D for video, but will continue to record audio on a video camera. Beware that you will need a powerful processor and the latest OS systems to be able to edit the footage.
