Good Camera to make an independent film with?

What is a good camera to make movies or film?

  • I am looking to be an independent film maker. I know the best quality cameras will be in the couple of grands like 4,000...however, what should is a good tool to start off with. I am a college student or soon to be college student...I just need something to help me out a bit.

    Try the Nikon D3100. That will give you a nice look at a reasonable price. Later on you can move up to better cameras. The Canon 7D and 5D are great and the Nikon D7000 is also great. I use the D7000 professionally for motion and I have shot the 7D & 5D also for big jobs. You need very good lenses though and that will bring your cost up quite a bit.

Film? Well there are several 16mm and 35mm cameras available but know that they are thousands of dollars each. Then there's the very expensive film stock and all the equipment required to go with it. That doesn't even mention the crew you'll need to run it all. Easy to invest $100,000 before exposing one frame of film. Video, well that's a different matter all together. There are lots of pretty digital video cameras on the market today. dslr cameras do a fair job but not as good as a camcorder would do. Then add in a good editing program and a computer that can handle the huge HD data stream. If you really want to be a film maker it's going to cost you lots of money up front. The Small Business Administration may be willing to help you if you can prove to them first that you have a clue about what you're doing and second that you can actually make money doing film.
