-
Got a canon EOS 500 D camera (reading from what it says on the box). When i first turned it on and took a picture using auto settings the area i wanted photographed appeared on the lcd screen. Now when I turn it on auto the settings come up ( what resolution, how big etc) and it won't show picture i want to take on the lcd.I have clicked the review button for it to come up and other buttons but no picture will come up.Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong? Thanks.

Hi, After following photoaces setup recommendations, you need to have a memory card installed to record an image. You should format the card in the camera - page 40 of the manual, you should select "low level format" option the first time you use a new card. This will erase all images on the card, so be very careful before you do this. Also ensure you have "shoot without card" disabled, page 130 of the manual, if not the camera will take a shot, without a card present, so will have no where to record it, and you will not be able to preview the image on the screen, or save it to your PC. The link to a PDF of the manual is below - I always find it helpful to have the PDF on the PC, as you can easily search for any topic, without having to thumb through the paper manual. Cheers Charles

It is a new camera. You need to set the camera up with the Date, Time, resolution etc. You are going to have to read the user manual to get started. If all else fails, call Canon 800.OK-CANON Using the LCD to compose and adjust the exposure sort of defeats the purpose of buying such a fine camera. Holding a 2# camera at arm's length is just asking for image blur. Use the camera with the viewfinder held to your eye and the camera held firmly in your two hands. That will reduce the risk of getting blurry images. The best use of live view is when your camera is attached to a telescope or microscope and if you are using the camera to shoot products while mounted on a tripod. In all cases, since the LCD eats a lot of power, connecting the camera to a AC adapter is recommended.

What you are doing wrong is trying to use your camera without first READING & STUDYING the Owner's Manual. Your 500D is much more sophisticated than a simple point & shoot so your learning curve is much steeper. Taking a couple of photography classes would definitely help. Here are some books that will also help you: "Digital SLR Handbook" by John Freeman. "The Art of Digital Photography" by Joseph Freeman. "Understanding Exposure" & "Understanding Shutter Speed", both by Bryan Peterson. Photographer and author David Busch writes easy to understand Guides for all DSLR cameras. Buying the one he's written for your camera will be helpful. http://www.dbusch.com Subscribing to at least one photography magazine will also benefit you. My personal favorite is Shutterbug but you should check the ones at the library and choose the one you like best. If you go to http://www.rangefindermag.com you can get a free subscription to the magazine. Its the "house organ" for Wedding & Portrait Photographers International (WPPI) so it isn't big on how-to articles or equipment reviews but does feature some inspiring photography. Photography - like math or chemistry or biology or any subject - requires study. If you don't study, you fail.
