What's the best camera for a 13 year old girl, who makes videos, AND is interested in photography?

  • I'm 13, and I'll be taking up photography classes next year, in 8th grade, and also when i get into high school. I've been interested in photography for 2 years already, and i feel it's about time to get the proper camera. My dad has a Canon DSLR camera (not sure which one it was. he never lets me use it), and it was around $700 for the camera, and $400 for his lenses. I make videos on youtube, like - unboxings, reviews on tech products, "how to.." videos, hair styles, and more. I really want a great camera that records video, and takes great shots. The camera is more for photography, and picture taking, than it is for videos; BUT, i do want to use it for both. My dad's insisting I buy a DSLR camera like him, but Nikon, since he has a canon. No fujifilm, or Sony cameras please. Only nikon, or canon, if you could. He wants to buy me a $600 camera, which is very nice of him to offer, but I don't think i'm ready to just start taking pictures/videos with a camera, that I PROBABLY won't even know how to use! So if you could help me find some $200 - $400 camera, that would be great. I'm just a beginner in photography; i took a few classes last spring, but it was like 6 classes only. thanks so much!

    buying anything other than Canon would be a waste of money. Since he has Canon, you can share all accessories and lenses. Otherwise, you would have to re-buy everything. now, it seems that you want a DSLR camera, in which case, you should look at the Canon Rebel T3, which is around $500 including the kit 18-55mm lens. It will do what you want it to do. if you DO NOT want a DSLR camera, but an advanced point and shoot camera, take a look at the Canon G12 and Nikon P7100 anyway, T3 from Canon, get that, learn well, and you will be just fine.

Lol I guess he wants you to have a Nikon so you won't be borrowing his lenses? I would suggest an Olympus E-Pl1 which is $300, does HD video and you can change the lenses. You can even use many lenses on it with an adapter. You said you only want Nikon or Canon but you do realize all the advantages of those two big brands only apply to DSLRs and not to mirrorless or point and shoot cameras?

Everybody wants a nice dSLR or the quality, but are you ready to lug it around? Take a look at the Nikon J1 in white, the 10-30mm lens should be fine (2.7x crop factor for that lens, ask your dad) or a Sony NEX 5N, you can get it in silver, black, white.
